Locks, Keys and Safes: Buying, Repairing and Maintaining

Establishing a security routine in a new home

Moving into a new home means lots of new experiences, from learning a new commute to meeting new neighbours. One part of this process is creating a new security plan to help keep your home safe from intruders. Establishing a new routine is a simple way to improve your home's security; here are a few tips on how to do it.

Create a key routine

Getting locked out of your own house can be a frustrating experience; fortunately, it's easy enough to avoid if you take the right precautions. Make sure that your keys are always somewhere that you can see them as you're leaving the house, whether that's in a dish on a table or hanging from a hook on a wall. The routine will help you remember always to take them with you. However, be sure not to put them somewhere that's easily visible from outside the house, such as near a window or door.

Establish backups

If you lose your key or have it stolen while you're out, you'll need to have a backup. Your locksmith can make copies of your house keys for you; get these done as soon as you can after moving in. Once you've done this, you'll need somewhere secure to keep them. You can leave copies of your keys with trusted friends or family; a neighbour is the most convenient choice, but if you've just moved into a new home you may not know your new neighbours well enough. It can be tempting to hide your key under a mat or in a flowerpot, but these traditional hiding places are too well-known to be really secure. If you don't have anyone you can leave a key with, or if you want to create a backup, consider a combination lockbox in an out-of-the-way location; your locksmith can help you choose the right product for you.

Plan for emergencies

If you do find yourself locked out and don't have access to a backup key, you need the services of an emergency locksmith. Things will go a lot more smoothly if you already know who you can call, so make sure that you know the number of a reliable local firm and have it programmed into your phone. Knowing who to call in an emergency will save you time and help give you the peace of mind you need.

Moving into a new home can be a complex process. Amidst all the responsibilities, be sure not to neglect creating a good security routine. It doesn't take much effort, and the long-term rewards are great.
